The work as a vehicle to explore beingness.
My first voice in the world of art was the theatre, where the objective is to inhabit that real moment of the now, whilst in a total artificial environment. That process, and space in time, absolutely fascinates me. It is what I seek when performing or shaping medium into an installation or a free standing piece. I believe it is that energy which connects with the viewer.
Currently I am studying the “conversation” between the dualities of tension and ease, action in inaction and inaction in action, repetitions; the space of suspension between two actions or states of being, a physical way to observe that space between breaths where there is no thought.
I work within a neutral monochromatic palette, creating a subtle communication through the senses and allowing me to work with line and shadow in a more direct way; this is a direct influence of my father’s black and white 20th century art photography, and his own study and influence of the principles of Japanese aesthetics.
